Borth Sand Dunes

Hello! Welcome back to my blog. In this post I thought I’d talk to you about a series of three works I painted depicting the sand dunes in Borth, Wales. When I was painting these works I wanted to create a tranquillity and calmness, as I had recently visited the sand dunes and wanted to replicate how I had felt being in that environment.

I was quite pleased with the outcomes of the paintings. I was aiming to capture the movement in the grass and the sand as well as the various tones, such as the red tones in the second painting. I found the pebbles in the first painting very repetitive to paint, although the repetitive motions were relaxing and soothing. I was pleased with the sky in ‘View from Borth Sand Dunes’ 1 and 2, I wanted it to seem soft and fluffy.

Whilst painting I had been thinking about ‘hiraeth’. This Welsh word has no direct English translation, however, it relates to a homesickness and deep longing for Wales. Especially for our language and traditions that have been eroded due to outside influence. This is partly why I desire to capture the natural beauty of Wales in my paintings.
