Hello! Welcome back to my blog. Today I wanted to talk about an exhibition I went to recently at the Arts Centre in my university. The artist being exhibited was Mary Lloyd Jones. She is a Welsh artist and her works are usually quite large unstretched paintings. For some of her paintings she uses cloth, stitching and dyes. Lloyd Jones’ work is inspired by the landscape and has an interest in early alphabets. She incorporates this into her artwork and uses ancient Bardic and Ogham alphabets as a reference to the otherness of Welshness.
Whilst looking around the exhibition I had the chance to do an activity which involved making my own piece inspired by Mary Lloyd Jones’ work. As a lot of her work incorporates Welsh quilt patterns I thought I would add some patterns to my piece. I also used some Bardic and Ogham symbols. I really enjoyed this activity and discovering the ancient symbols and I was thinking about the scripts and symbols I was choosing to use and what they personally meant to me.
